Arunachal Pradesh is home to a very rich mammalian wildlife population as the wide variety of altitudinal and climatic conditions have given rise to different forest types which create corresponding natural shelter , food etc. to varieties of wildlife. It is home to many rare and highly endangered species of Wild life like Mishmi, Takin, Hoolock Gibbon, Musk Deer, Bharal, Hisbid Hare, Flying Squirrel and more than 500 species of birds.
Among the large mammals, Mittan, which is a cross between the wild Gaur and domestic cattle, buffalo and elephant are all found in the plains and adjacent hills. The other high altitude animals include Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda etc. The Musk Deer is found in some areas of the state while the bharal has been reported in the western part of the state.
More than five hundred bird species have been recorded in Arunachal Pradesh, many of which are highly endangered and restricted to this state, e.g. White Winged Wood Duck, Sclater Monal, Temminck's Tragopan, and Bangal Florican etc.
The Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary is cradled on the northeastern fringe of the headquarters of the Upper Dibang Valley District inside the premises of Arunachal Pradesh known as Anini. The plot of land that is officially allocated to the Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary measures a staggering 4149 square kilometers. The prominent animals that are found in the Sanctuary are leopard, takin, goral, pheasants, musk deer etc.
Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the vicinity of the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar in the Papum-pare District and covers an area of 140.00 Sq. Km. Nyishi is the dominating tribe and the major festival is Nyokum celebrated during February.
Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary
Kamlang Reserved Forests under Lohit District was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary covering an area of 783 sq km in the north eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary is loaded with foliage and wildlife. The wildlife that can be seen in the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary is hoolock, gibbon, tiger, leopard, capped langur, red panda, takin and lots more.
Kane Wildlife Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh is in the true sense a retreat. The immaculate surroundings and the soothing climatic conditions at this wildlife sanctuary is incomparable.
Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary covering about 282 sq km, the sanctuary is home to gibbon leopard, elephant, tiger, and varieties of birds, fishes and butterflies. Mehao Lake forms a part of the sanctuary.
Pakhui Tiger Reserve is located in the East kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh. The total area of the Tiger Reserve is 862 Sq. Km bounded by Kemeng River. The area of present Pakhui Tiger Reserve was originally constituted as Pakke Reserve Forest.
Sited 13 km from Pasighat, the Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary is a series of river islands. The bizarre ecosystem of water bodies is home to thousands of migratory birds from Siberia and Mongolia and is of significance to the amateur and the serious ornithologist.
Mouling National Park is located in West Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. The forest of the park is semi evergreen. The area is famous for three varieties of goat -antelopes, locally known as takin, coral and serow. The other fauna found in the park are wild buffalo, tiger, panther, red panda, elephant, hog dear, barking deer, sambar, python etc. Besides it, the park has many birds including different types of Pheasants. |
