Sessa Orchid Sanctuary
Sessa Orchid Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh is the storehouse of orchids. Covering an area of 100 sq. km. between Bomdila and Bhalukpong, the Sessa Orchid Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh is rich with varieties of orchid in amazing colours and sizes. The sanctuary located in Tipi also houses red panda, pheasants and serow. Sessa Orchid Sanctuary surroundings are inhabited by Akas, Mijis and Sherdukpans tribes of Arunachal Pradesh.
Sessa is the "Orchid Paradise" of our country. Many of the species of Orchids found here are exceptional, sparse, and ornamental. Because of their curious shape, brilliant colour and ever-lasting quality of flowers, orchids are regarded as "trinkets" in the field of floriculture. Amongst the most celebrated species of animals that thrive in this sanctuary are the Red Pandas, Serows and Pheasants. It is needless to mention that the chief attraction is the unparalleled assemblage of orchids. The orchids that grow here are predominantly known for their drop-dead beauty and hence purely ornamental.
In Arunachal Pradesh, the flowers are part of the tribal culture. Certain orchids are cultivated in Gompas to symbolize the sanctity of the place, while others are used for festivals. Some are valued for their medicinal properties. Orchids can be found growing on decaying matter, Rocks or tree trunks. And they thrive in sub-tropical humid forests.
Sessa was created to conserve orchids in their natural habitat and is home to 200 orchid species and five new and rife ones. |
