Lingraj Temple

Lingraj Temple, Orissa The city of Bhubaneshwar, the capital city of Orissa, takes pride in hosting some of the most incredible and extravagant works of art and engineering in the forms of abundant number of temples and places of pilgrimage. One remains bemused while witnessing one such unique wonder of the past – the LingarajaTemple! It has been rightly titled as 'time quintessence of Orissan architecture'.

It stands as an outstanding example of Orissan work of architecture built in the eleventh century. The daunting tower of the temple is approximately 180 feet or 55metres and is curvilinear in shape. The other features of the temple are the Jagmohana (porch), the Natmandir (hall of dance) and the Bhoga-mandapa (hall of offering). The temple deity is the Swayambhu linga. It is not strictly a Shiva linga, but regarded as the ‘hari-hara’ linga – referring to half Lord Vishnu and the other half as Lord Shiva. Apart from the main temple, there are other numerous shrines found in the huge Lingaraja complex. However, the entrance to the temple premises by the non-Hindus is strictly prohibited. One can stand on the viewing platform situated to one side to have a clear view of the compound and the main buildings.
