Bilaspur
The city of Bilaspur is the headquarters of Bilaspur district and is situated about 111 kilometres north of Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. It is supposed to be the third biggest city of the state. Although it used to be a rural, tribal region, along with the gradual passage of time, the city has flown with the tide and has an urban culture prevailing with all modern amenities of a developed city. The two main markets, Gole Bazaar and the Sadar Bazaar have become the focal point of livelihood, invigorating enigma and enthusiasm among the residents of the place. It is as well the headquarters of the South East Central Railways which constitutes Nagpur, Raipur and Bilaspur respectively. It is located on the banks of the Arpa River which stems from the Maikal ranges of the Satpuras of central India. . It is a thriving center of rich natural resources. Chiefly it houses abounding reserves of dolomite and coal deposits on the Hasdeo valley. Bilaspur is renowned for its aromatic Doobraj rice and is therefore called the Rice Bowl of the Chhattisgarh region or very aptly termed in Hindi as Dhaan Ka Katora. Another factor which makes this place very popular is the production of Kosa. Kosa is a very light weighted silk fabric, having a luster and gloss, which makes it appropriate for designing it into casual garments or even expensive party wears. The place is blessed with extensive stretch of thick foliage and environmental topography which have proffered a shielded, as well as unadulterated haunt, to the treasured wildlife. The distinguished natural sanctuary where tourists can go and savour the beauty and endowment of nature is the Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary where one can witness the guar (Indian Bison), tigers, black buck, Chinkara, Sambar, blue bull, wild boar, barking deer, porcupine, monkeys, four-horned antelopes, hyenas and chital. The Khudia Dam and Khutaghat Dam cum reservoir are equally attractive for tourists, although sited in remote locales. Apart from these, Vivekananda Udyan, Kaanan Pindary zoo, Arpa River Chat Puja Ghat and Ramakrishna Ashram are other few major attractions of the city. Although the city has a cosmopolitan culture, there is a tinge of tribal influence as well. The tribal communities found here are the Parghi, Savra, Manji, and Bhayna. This city indeed has the benefit of a diversified culture and is certainly unique in its own way. The ideal time of visiting this place is October to March. |
