Jagdalpur

Jagdalpur is a small town in Chhattisgarh with beautiful landscape. It is also supposed to be the district headquarters. The place takes pride in its natural panoramic view – lush green woods, cluster of hills, tranquil surroundings with a rich endowment of flora and fauna and above all, the tribal societies dwelling in this area. The torrential cascades are found in the nearby regions. River Indravati passes through this town. The Ganga Munda and Dalpat Sagar lakes are on this river. The latter is the largest artificial lake in Chhattisgarh. It is named after Raja Dalpat Deo Kakatiya who built the lake for harvesting rain water. It is a prime fishing centre in the present times. The town houses the 70 year old Bastar Palace located at one end of the main road. While one section of the palace is operated as the medical college, the regal family members live in the other part till date. Various types of handicrafts are available in the market areas, especially during the festive seasons like Dussera and Diwali. Another important attraction of the place is the mehnirs or the monumental stones built on the grave of the dead persons. The drawings on the mehnirs refer to the things which were fond to the dead person/s. There is a strange practice of dropping a pinch of tobacco at the foot of a mehnir to show respect to the deceased.
